We are surrounded by color and often ignore it and its effects on us. Color theory over the years has been used in ways we are often unaware of.
Green is universally considered a color of calm and growth -and look how extensively it is used in schools! Red is a color that stays where it is put, yellow advances – hence, the change in fire engines. Many are now painted yellow so we can spot them coming from a greater distance. And look at the field of yellow colors in the painting above – yellow brings the field in close to your line of view.
Medieval times blue was the rarest color – very difficult and expensive to get lapis lazuli, the pigment. So the Virgin Mary’s robes were almost always painted blue – sacred, calm and peaceful. White is still considered pure and virginal – baptisms and brides – black for death.
And it differs from generation to generation – black if you are a Goth! We all have our favorite colors – some soothe us, some excite and stimulate us. Paying attention to the colors surrounding us is a powerful and inspiring thing to do!
Ask Yourself:
What is my favorite color? How does it make me feel? Do I see splashes of that color around my house?
Any colors that I am disturbed by, that I like to avoid?
How can I use the understanding of my personal color preferences to enhance my life?
Enjoy discovering the colors around you today on your walk, as you drive, as you cook! Patty & Suzanne
