With the normal demands of life, work and family, our attention is being constantly both demanded and fragmented. To focus on one’s own needs, desires, and aspirations can feel like a selfish indulgence. And yet, as a magnet on a friend’s refrigerator states: “You might as well be you, everyone else is taken!” And that takes some attention.
Throughout our book you are urged to take the time to think, process and observe who you are, where you are going, and what ideas may be glimmering in the background. With stress, loss, and unexpected change it is easy to fall back into familiar patterns of distraction – shopping, binging Netflix, drinking, overeating – rather than feel our deeper feelings, listen to our own needs, and find a place to begin to make needed changes.
Our book is useful for a lifetime – at different stages of your life, chapters and exercises will feel more appropriate than others. Pay attention to that! Only you will know what will be most helpful and when – a tech time out, a walk, sharing with a friend. It takes attention to hear that small voice inside that can lead you into a more satisfying, creative life.
Ask yourself –
How is my attention most often interrupted?
Do I feel I have enough time and space to pay attention to my own needs?
If not, how can I create that?
Hoping you carve out some time today to focus on your needs. Patty & Suzanne
