Show Up!

“The willingness to show up changes us. It makes us a little braver each time.”

                                                                         Brene Brown

I received this quote as an email and it warmed my heart. A few days before I had led a Paint & Sip fundraiser for our local Woman’s Club. Fourteen women registered – some full of trepidation about painting with watercolors. They showed up – and we all had a marvelous time, they were thrilled with what they created, and I think most of them will come again.

It isn’t easy to try something new. And we all need to evaluate what makes that possible. There are different requirements at different times of our life. We may need privacy – so no one can see us stumble and fail, swear and throw things away, start again with a sigh. Or group support may be what allows you to take a chance – this group enjoyed the opportunity to socialize as well as paint! A safe community matters. There was another aspect to this gathering that I had not considered before – an overarching philanthropical goal. Our club has been working hard to raise money for a new roof for our clubhouse and the fee for the evening was a fun way to contribute. We may find it easier to follow our curiosity about learning something new under the guise of “doing good works”!

Our local Art Center recently had an event that gave people that same permission – the Great Art Theft. For a $100 ticket (donation) you went to an event where, when your number was called, you got to claim a piece of art – all donated by excellent local artists. Many people are afraid to buy art – “It is so expensive,” “I don’t know what’s good.” Here was an opportunity, through donating to a good cause, to follow your curiosity, trust your intuition, and purchase a piece of art that resonated with you! What a great way to begin your art collection!

Curiosity is the nudge, and then we just need to show up and see what happens!

Ask yourself –

If there is something I’m curious to explore ? What do I need to “Show Up”?

If you feel a group would be helpful, then what are your group requirements?

If you prefer privacy, what do you need to show up for yourself – time, resources?

There are lots of opportunities for you to “show up” this week. How are you going to show up for yourself?  Patty & Suzanne
