As you know, we never get into religion or politics in these posts, and this one is no different. However, it seems that the growing angst and uncertainty among those we know and love is increasing as we head into November.
Since Patty and I spend a lot of time discussing the importance of creativity and its benefits in all areas of life, I think it’s relevant to this particular moment in time to focus on what we can each do to manage the constant barrage of election and world news for the next few months and save our sanity.
Some of you are still dealing with the devastating effects of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Others are dealing with medical issues and loss. And on top of that, whatever the outcome of the election, there is sure to be controversy over the results for weeks to come.
So, in order to find mental shelter from the “incoming” chatter, we would like to offer some ideas to help you navigate the rollercoaster ride of November. In times of adversity, confusion and turbulent times, your innate creativity can help you stabilize and provide an outlet for energy that could easily turn negative.
What would a sanity plan look like? We start with a simple plan that you can adhere to each day. A plan that has a few different activities that you really enjoy and that feel good, nurturing and non-stressful. In that daily plan, draw on those things that allow you to get away from the noise of news, drama and hand-wringing at different times of the day.
Be specific and write it down: have an activity for morning, something in the afternoon and then at night, so you have round the clock positive, nurturing activities to keep you balanced. And be sure to include a pre-bedtime plan.
As an example, here’s what mine is looking like. I love to walk where it’s quiet and lots of green. Mornings are cool now, and I’ll be lacing up my shoes early, listening to music while I walk. I’ve enrolled in 2 free online sketchbook workshops, so during the day, I can log on and escape into another world of drawing or maybe just looking at what other artists are doing. I also will be spending time writing some creative plots for our Liz and Dharma book. For the night time, I’ve downloaded some library books that look interesting, so in the evening I can make some tea or have a glass of wine while I’m whisked away into another time and place. Before bed, it’s soft music, comfy pjs, NO last minute checking of emails, nice fragrant lotion to rub on. And I’ll be honest – I also have some melatonin and Zquil on hand, just in case I toss and turn.
Cooking, spending time in your garden, hiking, cleaning out that hall closet (yes, even cleaning can be therapeutic!) are good add-ins– use your creativity in devising your personal plan.
And don’t forget to spend time with friends! Isolation can make your thoughts go in strange directions, so be sure to do something uplifting with a friend.
Hope these sanity saving ideas will keep you grounded as November unfolds. Do something nice for someone you care about and share this post and your list with them. They will thank you for it. And we welcome you to share your list with us too!
