We are taught early on to separate truth from fiction, to identify what is “real”, to compartmentalize in order to function. When we talk about creativity however, this concept becomes a bit tricky and blurs the edges of reality and imagination.
According to Blodgett and Genn, (one of our resources for some background on creativity), a benefit of creative activity is exactly that blurring that often occurs between reality and imagination.
Creative activity allows the mind to soar, the imagination to open up. We move naturally between the two states as children, it’s one of the joys of play- our mind is unfettered! Creative activity as adults allows us to return to that state of openness and possibility. The world becomes a more interesting place.
When we allow ourselves to follow our imagination, to dream, the impossible becomes possible. Having glimpsed it, we may have the patience and interest to bring the impossible into reality – that’s how inventions are manifested! Don’t become an old fogey- go play with abandon!
Ask yourself-
How tightly is my world constructed? Have I allowed myself any room to play?
Am I willing to “not know” sometimes, without shutting down, to let things cook and develop unconsciously?
How long since I have been surprised by joy?Â
Wishing you a lazy summer day just made for play and imagination! Patty & Suzanne
