Movement

In our water aerobics class we have a statement we all agree on: “Movement is Medicine”.  As aging women, we are all aware of how quickly our muscles and bones atrophy without regular attention. This is often challenging with the natural limitations of aging and the constraints of time and money that often feel set in stone. But worth exploring – we learn by doing, and that is true for adults as well as children! We are in charge of the Medicine we choose to take. A little humor helps with this process – we laugh as much as we moan and groan in our class!

As I’ve sat with this phrase, Movement is Medicine, over the past several months, I’ve realized that it doesn’t just apply to our physical bodies. We need movement mentally and emotionally as well to stay vibrant. Mentally it is important to be learning something new – to let your mind stretch to incorporate new information, new concepts. This may be as simple as reading a new genre of books, or watching videos or movies about places you have never been, history you know nothing about. It’s a big world out there!

Emotionally, it may be as simple as realizing that we don’t know it all. The world, as always, is changing rapidly and our self-imposed limits may need some reworking. New people and new relationships can be a challenge – and perhaps worthwhile. Being a good listener may be the way to start – an openness to hearing and connecting with diverse points of view. Taking time to process new experiences more deeply may allow more movement, more intimacy. The loneliness of aging is often due to refusing to step outside of our self-created safe boxes.

Ask yourself –

Where have I limited myself – body, mind and spirit?

What might I be open to exploring? Remembering that if I don’t like it, I’m free to move on! Be kind to yourself – this is for you, no one else!
