When we change our m.o., veer off the accustomed path, or take a time out, we want support but we often expect criticism. And that fear of criticism can stop us in our tracks. It’s daunting to try something new as an adult and risk looking incompetent.
But growth only occurs through trial and error and developing your creativity is often a messy business. Here is where true support is invaluable. What might true support look like? It does not mean that your support person or team needs to agree with everything you do. But they do need to listen and respect your process. Feedback should be about what they hear you say about you. When they share their concerns, they need to be able to own it if these concerns are actually about themselves and then projected onto you.
We have a whole chapter in our book on Communication and refer often to the idea of the importance of having someone to share this work with – you do not have to travel alone!
Ask Yourself:
Am I embarrassed to ask for support?
Who do I trust to give me support and honest feedback?
How do I feel when criticized? How do I deal with it?
Share yourself with someone supportive today!
